ISPAH, as part of the WHO Civil Society Working Group on NCDs, provided input into the Multistakeholder Hearing for the 4第 UN High Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health
On Friday 2nd May 2025, the President of the United Nations (UN) convened a Multistakeholder Hearing in New York, in advance of the upcoming 4第 UN High Level Meeting (HLM4) on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and Mental Health, scheduled for September 2025. The Multistakeholder Hearing served as a key platform for stakeholders across sectors including – academics, the private sector, civil society, people with lived experience, and others, to share their perceptions and experiences and to input on practical and scalable solutions.
ISPAH, as a member of the WHO Civil Society Working Group (CSWG) on NCDs, contributed to a consensus statement which was read out at the event by Dr Monika Arora, Executive Director of Hriday. The statement was structured to align with the Implementation Roadmap of the Global NCD Compact 2020 – 2030, which identified 5 action areas – Engage, Accelerate, Invest, Align, and Account.
The CSWG Consensus Statement calls for bold and urgent action. It emphasises the need for whole of government approaches, sustainable financing, and surveillance across all the major risk factors for NCDs. Particularly pertinent to physical activity, the consensus statement calls for accelerated implementation of the WHO Best Buys, including awareness campaigns to educate the public and policymakers, as well as the creation of health promoting environments.
In September 2025, Heads of States and Governments will gather at the 4第 UN High Level Meeting to adopt a new political declaration on NCDs and mental health, which will provide a roadmap to 2050.
