The Advocacy Lead provides strategic leadership to advance the Society’s advocacy priorities and strengthen its global voice around physical activity and public health. The Advocacy Lead coordinated advocacy initiatives, fostering partnerships and stakeholder engagement, and promoting evidence-informed policy and practice aligned with ISPAH’s mission and strategic goals. The role also involves supporting advocacy communications, identifying opportunities for impact, and helping ensure consistent messaging across the Society.

• Works closely with: ISPAH Executive (President, Past President and President Elect), ISPAH Board Members and relevant ISPAH Committees

Purpose of the Role

The ISPAH Advocacy Lead provides strategic and operational leadership to strengthen the Society’s advocacy efforts and support advocacy priorities across ISPAH activities, partnerships, and strategic initiatives. The role works closely with the Executive Committee, Board Members, and committees to identify opportunities for policy engagement, strategic collaboration, and global advocacy impact. Through their role on the Board, the Advocacy Lead helps ensure advocacy perspectives inform organizational priorities and decision-making, supports engagement with external stakeholders and partner organizations, and contributes to expanding ISPAH’s influence in advancing physical activity and public health globally.

Key Responsibilities

The Advocacy Lead is responsible for coordinating and advancing ISPAH’s advocacy activities in alignment with the Society’s strategic priorities. The role supports engagement with members, partners, and external stakeholders to strengthen ISPAH’s visibility and influence physical activity promotion and public health globally. Key duties include:

• Develop a biennial advocacy workplan for submission, review, and approval by the Executive Committee following each ISPAH Congress.
• Oversee and coordinate ISPAH advocacy activities and initiatives aligned with the Society’s strategic priorities.
• Identify and support opportunities for policy engagement, strategic partnerships, and collaborative advocacy initiatives.
• Liaise with the Executive Committee, Board Members, and relevant committees on advocacy-related opportunities and priorities.
• Engage with ISPAH members, external organizations, and partner networks to support advocacy-related activities and collaborations.
• Coordinate advocacy-related communications in conjunction with the Communications Lead as needed.
• Support the development and dissemination of advocacy statements, resources, and position statements where appropriate.
• Represent ISPAH in advocacy-related activities and events, including the ISPAH Congress and partner meetings where relevant.
• Provide written and verbal reports on advocacy activities and priorities at Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting

Selection Criteria

Essential

• ISPAH member. 
• Active engagement or prior involvement with ISPAH or similar national/international societies.
• Demonstrated leadership experience, including coordinating projects, committees, or networks.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage a diverse, global membership.
• Experience in advocacy, policy engagement, knowledge translation, public health promotion, or related activities.
• Ability to work collaboratively across sectors, disciplines, and cultural contexts.
• Commitment to equity, inclusion, and global representation in physical activity and public health.

Desirable

• Familiarity interacting with international policy environments, advocacy campaigns, or stakeholder engagement processes.
• Experience liaising with external organizations, partners, government agencies, or professional societies.
• Experience developing advocacy materials, position statements, or strategic communications.
• Understanding of global physical activity and public health priorities and challenges.

Time Commitment

Estimated average commitment of approximately 1-2 hours per week, with variability depending on activities and events.

Additional time may be required around ISPAH Congress, reporting periods, or strategic initiatives.

Appointment Process 

The ISPAH Advocacy Lead will be appointed through an open and transparent expression of interest process, in line with ISPAH governance procedures. Appointment is subject to approval by the ISPAH Board, and you may be required to attend an interview.
