The Climate Lead supports the integration of climate and environmental sustainability across ISPAH activities. The role works closely with the Executive Committee, Board members, and relevant committees to help ensure that the Society’s programs, partnerships, and activities consider their environmental impact and promote sustainable practices. Through collaboration, the Climate Lead helps highlight the connections between climate action, active living, and public health.

Reporting and Relationships

• Reports to: ISPAH President
• Works closely with: ISPAH Executive (President, Past President and President Elect), ISPAH Board Members and relevant ISPAH Committees

Purpose of the Role

The Climate Lead provides strategic leadership on climate and environmental sustainability within ISPAH. As a member of the Board, the Climate Lead advises on the integration of environmental considerations into the Society’s strategic planning, operations, and key initiatives. The role also supports the development of practical approaches to reduce environmental impact while maintaining the effectiveness and accessibility of ISPAH’s activities. By working collaboratively with the Executive, Board members, and partners, the Climate Lead contributes to aligning the Society’s work with broader global efforts to address climate change and promote sustainable practices.

Key Responsibilities

The ISPAH Climate Lead supports the integration of climate and environmental sustainability considerations across the ISPAH activities, helping guide the Society’s efforts to reduce environmental impact. Key duties include:

• Champion the integration of environmental sustainability and climate considerations across ISPAH activities, initiatives, and events.
• Advise the Board and Executive Committee on opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint of Society operations and programs.
• Support the development and review of policies and guidance related to sustainability and climate considerations within ISPAH.
• Work with relevant committees and partners to encourage environmentally responsible practices, including in relation to the ISPAH congress and travel.
• Identify and share opportunities for ISPAH to contribute to conversations linking physical activity, health, and climate change.
• Help communicate ISPAH’s sustainability efforts and progress to members and external interested parties.

Selection Criteria

Essential

• ISPAH member. 
• Demonstrated interest or experience in climate change, environmental sustainability, and the links between climate, health, and active living.
• Experience contributing to initiatives, projects, or discussions related to sustainability, climate action, or environmental responsibility.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with a diverse, global membership.
• Experience in committee, volunteer, or leadership roles (e.g., coordinating projects, working groups, or organizational initiatives).
• Commitment to advancing sustainable practices and climate-conscious approaches within the physical activity and public health community.

Desirable

• Familiarity with approaches to reducing environmental impacts within events, organizations, or programs (e.g., sustainable meetings or travel practices).
• Experience contributing to policy, advocacy, or knowledge translation related to climate and health.
• Experience working with international partners, networks, or professional societies.
• Interest in advancing the co-benefits between physical activity, healthy environments, and climate action.

Time Commitment

Estimated average commitment of approximately 1-2 hours per week, with variability depending on activities and events.

Additional time may be required around ISPAH Congress, reporting periods, or strategic initiatives.

The ISPAH Climate Lead will be appointed through an open and transparent expression of interest process, in line with ISPAH governance procedures. Appointment is subject to approval by the ISPAH Board, and you may be required to attend an interview.
