Overview

Emeritus Professor Estelle (Vicki) Lambert is former Director, University of Cape Town Research Centre for Health through Physical Activity, Lifestyle and Sports, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town. Her research includes work in the areas of prevalence, burden of disease and epidemiology; underlying aetiology and mechanisms of health effects/benefits; correlates, determinants and ecological factors associated with physical activity and obesity across the life-course, including environmental determinants; and most recently, socio-environmental and behaviour change interventions.  The focus of her research is in LMIC settings and more recently, on the nexus between physical activity  insecurity and food insecurity, environmental and social justice.  Lambert is an advocate for citizen science and co-creation iand research translation. She has served as an expert consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) on a number of initiatives on physical activity and health since 1998.  In 2016 and 2017, she served as part of a team invited to develop the Global Action Plan for Physical Activity (GAPPA), and more recently, on the Guidelines Development Group for Global Physical Activity Guidelines.  She is an author/ co-author (including as nee’ Estelle Dover or Vicki Lambert) on over 365 peer-reviewed publications (H-index of 70, Scopus May 2024, cited over 35500 times). She has also been on the Clarivate Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher list in 2020 (Cross-discipline) and in 2021 -2023 (Social Sciences). In 2024, she was awarded the South African Medical Research Council’s Platinum Award for Lifetime Achievement.
